Which vector best indicates the direction of the force on the electron?

a)right c) up

Let x point to the right, y point up, and z point toward you out of the screen. This is a right-hand-rule coordinate system. Let's also choose convenient units where the magnitude of everything happens to be 1.

Then q is -1 (it's an electron), v is (1,0,0), and B is (0,0,-1).

Hence, q v × B is (0, -1, 0). (If you prefer, x-hat × z-hat = - y-hat, which gives us three negative signs.)

This would be the down direction.

Point your index finger of your right hand along v and your middle finger along B, and then confirm that this gives you "up." But since the electron has a negative charge, you get the same result.

Either way.
