What is the name of the japanese drum toy in the Karate Kid II movie?
Also, do you know when is the earliest time it was used? What other parts of the world is it found in?
It also is called a spinning drum, a spinning drum toy, and a monkey drum. They can be found in a number of cultures.

I've even seen this type of drum at PowWows in our area though it generally is simpler looking and with no painted decorations. I can't find a picture of one. So, I guess you can see that you can't pin down where this drum design originated, anymore than you can pinpoint where the first "regular" drum was made. Actually, it looks as if the basic design sprang up all over the world.
I'm not going to say that it originated one place because I don't believe that would be true, anymore than claiming that singing and dancing showed up in one place first. Bells also have worldwide presence though some are struck on the outside and some have clappers.
